Making the move to Supportive Living can be a stressful time. Whether you are moving from the home you have lived in for many years or an apartment unit, downsizing is a time-consuming task which may feel overwhelming. Choosing what to part with and what to bring with you is a big decision. Read on for some downsizing tips to help you before your move:
Create a Plan
Give yourself lots of time to go through your things and determine what you need to bring with you. Look at the calendar and plan out how you are going to prepare week by week before your move. By giving yourself lots of time to pack, you won’t be overwhelmed. Recruit family or friends to help you downsize, as many hands make light work.
Visualize Your New Space
When you tour OSCR, the model suites are staged as if they are lived in. You may take photos of the unit to help you visualize your furniture and décor in the space. We provide a floor plan with approximate measurements in the application folder; use this information to ensure that your items will fit comfortably in your new space.
Make a List
Downsizing can be overwhelming if you are only looking at the big picture. Make a list of what you need to bring with you before you start going through your belongings. Break each area down and start from there. Begin with items that aren’t sentimental – these are typically easier to part with. Anything that is not on your list of belongings to bring can be passed down to family members or friends, donated to charity, or sold. Downsizing is a chance to appreciate the items that mean the most to you and let go of things that no longer serve a purpose to you.
Focus on the Future
Downsizing and moving can be an emotional time. Remind yourself of why you are making the move to Supportive Living. Life at OSCR allows you to live comfortably without the burden of cleaning, meal preparation, laundry, and home maintenance. The next chapter of your life enables you to meet new friends, participate in social activities, and focus more on the things you enjoy.
By keeping a positive attitude and sticking to your plan, downsizing can be a painless task. With a clear plan and a network of supportive family and friends, your transition to Supportive Living at OSCR will be a smooth and enjoyable experience.
